Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a triumph at all levels, from how it has been managing what was shown about it to the execution of the video game. In an age with overexposure to information, in which each playable feature becomes fuel for the most ripped-up marketing, Nintendo comes to the launch with a masterful move: make us believe that we know too much about the title, but without really knowing a tiny one part of the beast that is.
They are not randomly chosen video games. Like them, Breath of the Wild is destined to make history. It is the largest project of Nintendo, and at the same time its peak as a developer. I do not remember a game made with so much care, passion and talent. A job that is only available to the best, which goes from surprise to surprise, which is so good that you think so much genius has to deflate at some point. But like the legends, it resists until the end, reaching immortality. It is a dream come true.
The great success of Breath of the Wild is to have signed up to the car of the open worlds, and have done so understanding its great crossroads, consisting of allying two irreconcilable enemies (freedom and narrative). Both must coexist in a title of these characteristics, it is inevitable. The solution writes a new chapter in the history of videogames, because you are not obliged to follow a certain order, but you are the one who decides.
The only thing Zelda asks you: Breath of the Wild is that you dedicate time, reaching points where you will feel that you can not continue in history without first improving your equipment. The game is a set of gears perfectly placed so that the faster you advance in the plot, the harder you have to move forward. The best sign is that within a few hours you can face the end of the game … to die miserably. Life lesson: the important thing is not the destination, but the great journey you are going to experience. Do not rush the road, enjoy it, because Nintendo has designed a rich environment for you to do it.
I apologize in advance if I’m not too specific, but I do not want to spoil the experience. Suffice it to say in this analysis that Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a game deep enough in content that you can not even remember the mission you were doing. There are collectables and quantity of secrets. It is no coincidence that Nintendo offers us a list of missions to select and display on the map. We can even mark the points we have discovered to return to them later. It is overwhelming the number of things you can do, with side quests and activities that raise the hours of play to an unknown number in a Zelda.
Even once the story ends, the video game continues, because here the important thing is what you can do, not what you have to do. It is satisfying in itself the fact of collecting plants, of becoming a miner to obtain precious stones or simply to finish off enemies to steal their belongings. Then all that you can sell and get rupees to get better weapons, shields and armors. The systems are so well integrated that you do not believe that this video game is for real.
The extraordinary thing is that, despite their greatness, the systems coordinate so commendably that you never get frustrated. Apart from teleportation (in key areas), you can catch a horse and shorten travel time noticeably. Going on foot costs more, but in return it allows you to climb mountains, because there are no limits in this game. No invisible walls or tricks that are worth. The only limitation is as far as you can see. If you want, you can climb to the top of a peak and launch yourself in paragliding to get around a river, or a gorge, or reach a point that otherwise you could not.
The incredible thing is that these sanctuaries are not a “sine qua non” condition to advance. Its function is to increase your hearts and capacity for resistance. A training, so to speak. However, it is what I told you before. If you go fast in history and do not overcome some of these sanctuaries, the road becomes an uphill climb. That’s why I can not stop saying that the structure of this game is formidable, an authentic demonstration of ingenuity that forces you to go back and forth between history and exploration. Both parties are destined to love each other. They depend on each other
